New February
Time Slot

The Tampa International Film Festival, which has run in April in years past, takes its new February time slot in response to a survey of the Tampa Bay Film-going community, who indicated that February would be an ideal festival time. Founder and Director Dr. Rob Tregenza is planning for a banner year in "bringing the very best of international cinema to Tampa.” The mission of the festival is to provide an opportunity for the Tampa Bay area to better understand and enjoy diverse cultures from around the world.

2005 Festival Success

The 2005 festival proved to be the largest yet, with 24 international films that screened April 1-9 at Sunrise Cinemas. New films from Cuba, Mexico, Germany, Italy and France were selected by Dr. Rob Tregenza of The University of Tampa and Eddie Cockrell of Variety.

"I am excited with the growth and the support that this year's festival has received from the Tampa Community,"said Tregenza.

As part of the festival, a free public forum was moderated by MOSI president Wit Ostrenko, entitled "Technology, Film and the Future." Included in the festival were two classic early films, Metropolis and Modern Times, both screened from beautifully restored 35mm prints. These films were part of the Open Vault section of the festival, and were presented to both situate and inspire discourse for the public forum.

Special guest Caroline Martel, Montreal filmmaker and director of The Phantom of the Operator, was part of the panel discussion.

The major sponsors of 2005 were ARTE, MOSI, The University of Tampa, the Tampa Bay Film Society and Little Harbor.

He has been called "India's Master Dramatist" by Cameron Bailey of the Toronto Film Festival. His films have been described as "dreamy," and "masterful," and they have made their way around the world, to festivals internationally. Now, The Tampa International Film Festival presents a retrospective on Director Buddhadeb Dasgupta, who will be visiting the festival and introducing his films to the audience.

Born in Anara, India, Dasgupta studied economics and won a special jury prize for directing at the 2000 Venice International Film Festival for The Wrestlers (2000). The TIFF will screen this early film, as well as his three most recent films: Memories in the Mist (2005, also screened at the Toronto Film Festival), Chased By Dreams (2004), and A Tale of a Naughty Girl (2002).

The Tampa International Film Festival needs your support for the 2006 festival and relies on both corporations and individuals. Become a sponsor today by contacting Rob Tregenza at rtregenza@ut.edu. Thank you for your support!
